Day of the dead embroidery and cross stitch

I have always enjoyed the imagery from the festival of the Day of the dead. I recently turned up some illustrations I had made during my jewelry making course which I took as part of my degree these had been inspired by the day of the dead.

Free cross stitch tea cup PDF pattern

Who doesn't love a cup of tea? I know it was once seen as a British institution and now seems to be being surpassed by coffee, but in my home the tea cup still rules supreme. If your also a like minded tea lover, then this is the chart for you.

Arrow art prints

I love the graphic quality of arrows and often find myself doodling them when on the phone. It probably says something about my personality. I'm looking for a direction or I don't know which way to go. Whatever they mean to you, they look great as art prints. These are my four favorite arrow designs, that I have created. These are all available on fabrics via my Spoonflower  and Woven Monkey stores. Alternatively you can buy them as art prints from my Society6 store or on a range a products at my Redbubble  or Zazzle stores.

Great Halloween craft ideas

I do love crafting for Holidays and Halloween is becoming one occasion we celebrate more than we used to in the U.K. We have a lot of catching up, until we are anything like the USA for all things spooky, but with that in mind I thought I'd quickly share my Pinterest Halloween board as it has some great, quick and kid friendly ideas on it. Enjoy!

Children's painting ideas.

Children's painting ideas.
I know many parents that are adversed to letting their little ones paint, but I personally don't mind a little mess. Tidying up and cleaning down is all part of the fun in our house.
The only problem that we sometimes encounter is how to make it accessible for my youngest who is just over two. He found the paintbrushes just to cumbersome and they loaded up with too much paint. So this was the ideal solution. Painting with q-tips. You only need a small amount of paint of them, they are great for painting with but also dotting and you can have one for each colour. That enables the colours to stay cleaner and you don't end up with a mud colored painting!

Spoonflower design competition - State fair

Do you know Spoonflower? It's a great website which allows you to design and print your own fabric. It is also a great place to shop for unique and original designed fabric as many of the designers list their work in their own little store. I have a store on Spoonflower and would love it if you took a look.

They also run a weekly design competition and I love to take part as it often make me design things I wouldn't normally draw.

The latest competition is entitled State fair. This was the brief:

'Here in Spoonflower's home town, the State Fair is by far one of our most beloved fall traditions. Local farmers show off their biggest, best crops and livestock, we ride colorfully-lit ferris wheels, and indulge in probably more fried delicacies on a stick than we should. We want to know what your version of the State Fair looks like where you live! Let us see your best State Fair designs in this week's design contest.'

We don't really have state fairs in the UK as much as I know, the closest thing I could think of was the Three counties show. It is mainly an agricultural show and when I was a child it was one of the things you could let out of school for, so naturally we all went.

When trying to come up with as design I kept failing as my pictures of livestock were rubbish, so I focused more on the handicrafts and produce tents. This is what I came up with - Jam on black.

Camera cross stitch

How cute is this little camera. I designed it based on my little red camera I had as a child. I'm not sure what to do with it now. I think it definitely lends itself to something travel related. Perhaps a scrapbook layout or patched onto a luggage tag or passport cover?

If you would like the pattern it's available free from here. Don't forget you can also check out my free cross stitch patterns page.

Rainbow rice - sensory play

Sensory play was something I hadn't heard of until I had my youngest. Of course my eldest had played with the sandpit and had done water play but he hadn't explored them in a way that really stimulated him. My youngest on the other had has really enjoyed sensory play and one of his most favorite activities is rice.
I have found it very easy to colour and recently we have taken to using it to explore a rainbow of colours.

Quick and easy pirate activities

We do like a pirate theme in the Cartwright house and this summer has been no exception. However with my youngest his concentration doesn't stand for long winded activities, so these were our three favorite quick and easy pirate activities.

1. Make a treasure map. For older children they may want to draw out a map, but for speed and ease we made our treasure map using stickers.
Quick and easy pirate activities

I don't know about yours but my boys LOVE stickers and I keep a whole stack of them in different themes, ready to pull out when they feel like creating. Then all I needed to do was offer them a large sheet of parcel paper torn around the edges and hey presto! An almost instant treasure map was created.

Gluten free fresh tomato soup recipe

Now we are coming to the end of summer I always tend to find I have a few good tomatoes hanging on soaking up the last of the sun. What a better way to eat the Summer and warm yourself for Autumn than with a rich and delicious bowl of fresh tomato soup.
